Effective use of communication strategies if you suffer hearing loss
If you are loosing your hearing or finding it difficult to hear, here are some tips on to improve communications:
- Be close to the talker for hearing and speech reading
- ask people to talk at a moderate pace (like a newscaster)
- ask people to look at you and keep their hands and objects away from their mouths so you and see them clearly. try lip reading
- if one ear is better than the other, have the person position himself on the side of your good ear
- avoid background noise
- plan ahead (ie: call restaurants ahead and ask for specific seating)
- ask specific questions about what you have heard rather than just saying what
- repeat what you have heard to see if you have understood correctly
