Tips to pet proof your home
Danger could be hiding in corners and cabinets of your home. Here are some tips to keep your pet(s) away from these household hazards:
Medicine: Child-proof does not always mean pet-proof too. Dogs can easily open bottles by crushing or chewing on them. Cats can knock down pill containers or organizers from a counter top or table.
Warning signs: Vomiting, diarrhea, seizures or loss of appetite. Read the rest of this entry »
Dogs need TLC too
Dogs need TLC to help them be emotionally stable. I have had small and medium dogs (6 pounds-60 pounds) and have seen TLC work.
My mutt golder retriever lived over 18 years-at the end of his life, the TLC kept him going. I remember when he was 13-15 he still had the strength to run and jump on me. At the end, the only form of play he could manage to do is put his head on my lap. He would look at me with those big brown eyes in a way that I interpreted as love.
My 6 pound Chihuahua just wants to be hugged. When I get home from work, she is satisfied if I hold her, like you would an infant, for 5-20 minutes depending on my schedule. This seems to calm her down and not remember that I ‘deserted’ her all day while I was at work. Read the rest of this entry »
dog dental care
it is important to brush your dogs teeth regularly. you can buy dog toothpaste in any pet supply store. getting started is the hard part. It will take a while for you and your dog to work out a time of day and method for brushing. Here are some tips to get started:
- go to the pet store and buy dog toothpaste and tooth brush. There are many types of tooth brushes. with my 6 pound tea cup chihuahua, the pet store dental brushes did not work, so I actually bought an Oral B kids first toothbrush which works great.
- pick a time of day and location to brush your dogs teeth. consistency is important to build this tooth brushing habit, so try to pick a time and location you can use daily
- after brushing your dogs teeth, you should reward him/her. I have a specific Omega 3 treat that I give to my dog after every brushing.
provide fresh water daily
to maintain the well being of all pets, provide fresh water daily. during the hot weather seasons, make sure your pets have plenty of water both inside and outside of the house.
